HUMAN DIGNITY AND A NEW DEBT TAXONOMY

IF HUMAN DIGNITY becomes our north star for policymaking around household debt, a useful taxonomy of household debt should be one that clearly distinguishes household debt consistent with human dignity from household debt inconsistent with human dignity. We can tolerate, even encourage, debt consistent with respect for human dignity. We cannot tolerate debt inconsistent with respect for human dignity, and we should work toward abolishing such debt. In this chapter, I argue that the guiding principle of human dignity requires an abolitionist approach to survival debt and any debt that is extractive (whether survival or opportunity) and a reparative approach to opportunity debt.
